It is still possible to switch to Windows 10 for free

Microsoft, with Windows 10, had decided to distribute it almost for free to those who already had Windows 7, Windows 8 and 8.1 on their PC. A year to make the free pass and now it would seem expired for a while, but instead ... it's still free!

In December 2017, the possibility to upgrade for free to Windows 10 for those with a previous regular Windows license expired. Actually it would still have been possible through the Assistive Technology page, for all those who have disabilities, but currently it seems disabled.

A real surprise was that in 2018, without any official comment from Microsoft, it is still possible to switch to Windows 10 for free on Windows 7 and Windows 8 PCs.

Officially the free upgrade offer expired, Microsoft continues to leave active the possibility of obtaining a perfectly validated Windows 10.

Microsoft also allows you to switch from Windows 10 Home to Windows 10 Pro using a product code always from a previous Windows 7, 8 or 8.1 (Pro / Ultimate).

So to get Windows 10 for free, which is still considered the most secure operating system ever, just have a PC with an "original" copy of Windows 7/8 / 8.1 (with license activated correctly). Downloading Windows 10 from the Microsoft site you can easily get the free update.

How to upgrade to Windows 10 for free

Once you have clicked "Download the tool" to download the Media Cretion Tool you can then run it and proceed in the various guided steps.
Alternatively, the Media Creation Tool also includes the option "Update this PC directly".
The update does not delete files or installed programs, but a nice backup of the important data is always advisable. You never know!

With the Microsoft Media Creation Tool you can use the option to save installation files to a USB drive or as an ISO file.

When upgrading to free Windows 10, you will not be asked for a product code, as long as your PC is connected to the Internet.

Your only concern is the minimum hardware requirements for installing Windows 10: Processor: 1 gigahertz, RAM: 1 GB (32 bit) or 2 GB (64 bit), free disk space: 16 GB.

Again, Microsoft allows you to go back to the previous version of Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 in case something doesn't work properly. The process is simple: from the "Start" button at the bottom left you have to select "Start" and below you can read "Back to previous version of Windows 10".

Warning: the rethink now seems to be valid within only 10 days.
